Start: Freedom Square – The Black Obelisk
What is the purpose of the strange black bullet-shaped monument in the center of Freedom Square?
Explanation:
Welcome to Freedom Square (Náměstí Svobody) – the heart of Brno and your starting point. This bustling square is surrounded by shops, cafes, and some very opinionated locals when it comes to the black obelisk standing near the center. Officially, it’s a modern astronomical clock, designed by artist Oldřich Rujbr and unveiled in 2010. But unofficially, it’s often called “the bullet” or… more cheeky names due to its shape. Every day at 11:00 a.m., it releases a glass marble that you can try to catch through one of the four holes—if you’re lucky (or fast). Why 11:00? That commemorates the moment Brno tricked Swedish invaders during the Thirty Years’ War (a story you’ll hear about later). Love it or hate it, this monument is now one of Brno’s quirkiest and most recognizable landmarks. Let the games begin!

Directions to next stop (St. Jacob’s Church):
With your back to the obelisk, walk straight, towards the fountain, following the tram line. Continue up Rašínova Street, and look for St. Jacob’s Church (Kostel sv. Jakuba) on your right – its tall tower and pale stone exterior are hard to miss.
